Privacy Policy
The short version
- No accounts, no sign-in.
- No analytics, no ads, no tracking.
- Munchie Bot has no server that receives your information. Nothing you do in the app is sent to us.
- Your scans, ratings, saved items and settings are stored only on your iPhone.
- The app connects to the internet only to download the lab report you scan, to fetch updated strain profiles from munchiebot.app, and, if you allow location, to look up the nearby dispensary through Apple Maps.
What the app stores, and where
Everything you create in Munchie Bot is kept in the app’s storage on your iPhone:
- Scans: the lab report link, the results read from it (cannabinoids, terpenes, product, brand, lab and dates), the score, and when you scanned it.
- Ratings: the rating you give a product and, if you add them, how you took it and how much.
- Store names: the name of the dispensary noted for a scan, found through location (below) or typed by you.
- Saved items and searches: scans and strains you save, and your recent strain searches.
- Settings: your answer to the age check, your sensitivity settings and other preferences.
Munchie Bot doesn’t have a server or a database of its own, so none of this is sent to us or to anyone else.
Camera
The camera is used only to read QR codes while the scanner is open. The camera image is processed on your iPhone by iOS. No photos or video are saved or sent anywhere. If you don’t allow camera access, you can paste a report link or open a PDF instead.
Location
Location is optional and is used only when you scan a lab report, to note which dispensary you’re in. At that moment the app reads your current position once and asks Apple Maps for dispensaries within about 250 meters. Only the store’s name is saved with the scan. Your coordinates are not stored, and they are never sent to us.
Apple performs the map search under Apple’s privacy policy. The app uses location only while it’s open, never in the background. You can turn location off at any time in Settings › Munchie Bot › Location, and you can edit or remove the store name on any scan.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Munchie Bot can remind you to rate a product about 75 minutes after you scan it. Reminders are scheduled on your iPhone; no notification service or server is involved. You can turn them off in Settings › Notifications › Munchie Bot.
Internet connections
To read a lab report, Munchie Bot downloads it directly from the address in the QR code or link you give it. That is usually the testing lab’s report website or file host, such as Confident LIMS or GrowFlow. If that page links to the report’s PDF, the app downloads the PDF too. For Confident LIMS reports, the app reads the same report from Confident LIMS’s public data service.
Like any website you visit, those sites receive your IP address and the address of the report you asked for, and they handle that under their own privacy policies. Munchie Bot doesn’t send them anything else about you. PDFs you open from the Files app are read on your iPhone.
When the app opens, it also downloads a public file of strain profiles from www.munchiebot.app, the same file for everyone, so typical strain scores stay current without an app update. The request carries nothing about you, your scans or your ratings.
The website is hosted on GitHub Pages. Like any web host, GitHub receives your IP address with each request and logs it for security, as described in GitHub’s Pages documentation and the GitHub Privacy Statement. We don’t receive those logs and don’t use them to identify anyone.
Apart from these downloads and the Apple Maps lookup described above, the app doesn’t connect to any server.
Backups and exports
Munchie Bot keeps an automatic backup of your scans in a file named Munchie Bot Backup.json in the app’s Documents folder. You can see it in the Files app under On My iPhone › Munchie Bot. It stays on your phone.
Export scans saves a copy wherever you choose, such as iCloud Drive or another folder in Files. That copy is then stored by the service you picked. Import scans brings an exported file back in.
What we don’t do
- We don’t ask you to create an account or sign in.
- We don’t include analytics, advertising or tracking tools in the app.
- We don’t track you across other apps or websites.
- We don’t sell or share your information. We never receive it in the first place.
Apple’s services
Apple handles App Store downloads and any purchases under its own privacy policy. If your iPhone backs up to iCloud or to a computer, those backups can include Munchie Bot’s data, just like other apps’ data. If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple may pass along crash reports and usage statistics that don’t identify you. We use those only to fix problems.
Deleting your data
You can delete any scan from the list in the app. Deleting the app removes all of its data from your iPhone, including the automatic backup. Copies you exported elsewhere remain until you delete them. Because we don’t hold any of your data, there is nothing for us to delete or hand over, but you’re welcome to contact us with questions.
Who the app is for
Munchie Bot is for adults 21 and older where cannabis is legal. It isn’t directed at children, and it doesn’t collect personal information from anyone. Scores are estimates, not medical advice.
Changes to this policy
This policy describes the app as it works today. If a future version sends any information off your iPhone, for example to sync your scans or to share ratings that improve scores, we’ll update this page before that version is released and explain what is sent and why. Sharing your ratings or scans would be opt-in. The effective date at the top shows when this page last changed.
